Cross Country: Glacier's Hill fades late at Mountain West Classic

MISSOULA — Glacier standout distance runner Annie Hill couldn’t repeat as the Mountain West Classic cross country champion for the third straight season, finishing in 12th place at the University of Montana Golf Course after pulling up in the last mile with an apparent injury.

Hill, who entered the Saturday race as the fifth-ranked prep cross country runner in the nation, ran her first two miles in 11:16.22 and held the lead throughout before falling back late. Hill collapsed after hobbling to the finish line, finishing in 18:13.48.

Billings Senior sophomore Tiahna Vladic, herself ranked No. 10 in the country, won the meet comfortably in 17:04.63. Hill set the course record two seasons ago in a time of 16:39.

Flathead’s Kaitlin Wride finished just behind Hill in 13th with a time of 18:17.

The Bozeman girls placed three runners in the top five on the way to another team title at the prestigious meet. Glacier finished sixth as a team and Flathead 11th.

Flathead’s Ben Perrin finished in third place in the boys race in 15:18 with Bozeman’s Chase Equall winning in 14:58. Columbia Falls’ Sage Wanner finished 21st in 15:51.93 and Flathead’s Jaden Anderson 24th in 15:56.

Glacier’s Tevyn Stetson finished 26th in 16:00.

Bozeman also won the boys meet, easily outlegging three out-of-state schools for first place. Glacier finished fifth as a team and Flathead 11th.
