Polson softball splits doubleheader

POLSON — Polson softball split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, topping Butte Central 9-2 and falling to Belgrade by the same score.

The Pirates scored big early against Butte Central, plating a pair of runs in the first inning and five runs in the second to take a 7-1 lead. Polson scored twice more in the fourth inning before coasting to the win.

Kaelyn Smith, Hannah Fryberger, Haley Fyant and Quinn Motichka each had two hits as Polson piled up 13 in the win. Fryberger added three RBIs and Fyant hit in a pair of runs and got the win in the circle.

Polson seemed to be headed to a sweep early on against Belgrade, leading 1-0 through three innings.

Belgrade got on the board in the fourth inning and took a 3-2 lead after five innings but broke the game open in the seventh, scoring six runs to pull away with the win.

Fryberger had a double and an RBI to lead the Pirates in the loss.

ST. IGNATIUS — Libby took a lead on Mission in the top of the fifth inning but couldn’t get out of the home half of the frame with a lead, losing a close game to the Bulldogs.

The Loggers took leads of 1-0 and 3-1 in the fourth and fifth innings, only for Mission to answer each time and tie or take the lead.

Linsey Walker was 1 for 4 with an RBI to lead Libby from the plate.

The Copperheads scored 10 runs in the first two innings and another 10 in the third and fourth to pull away.

Makenah Apeland was 2 for 2 from the plate with a double to lead the Lions.
