Bigfork girls, Eureka boys track champs

EUREKA — The Bigfork girls and Eureka boys made strong statements, winning the team track titles at the Eureka Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Bigfork junior Bryn Morley put up the second-fastest time in the state this season in the 3,200 meters, winning the meet with a time of 11:00.68 to qualify for the state meet. Valkyries teammate Anya Young also set a state mark, finishing easily in second in 12:14.60 in the 3,200 and winning the 1,600 by bettering her fastest time in Class B this season to 5:24.53. Shae Anderson, Zoe Reichner and Abby Ellison also won events to help Bigfork win the meet with 124 1/2 points.

Libby’s Emily Mossburg and Eureka’s Kaylee Kronsperger each cleared 4 feet, 10 inches in the high jump to set state-qualifying marks, Mossburg winning the event on a tiebreaker. Kronsperger won the 100 earlier in the day and Mossburg won the 800.

Plains’ Kara Altmiller won both the shot put and discus, setting a state mark in the discus with a throw of 112-7.

The Eureka boys dominated in the field, winning 6 of the 7 events, to score a meet-best 167.5 points as a team.

Kaelan Yanak won both the shot put and discus, throwing a season-best 47-3 in the shot as the Lions took the top four spots in each of the two throws.

Garrett Graves won both the high and triple jumps and Cannan Smith won the pole vault and javelin.

Libby’s Tim Goodman won both the 800 and 1,600 and Bigfork’s Matt Farrier won the 100 dash and 300 hurdles.

Frenchtown Invitational

FRENCHTOWN — A few local athletes faired well at the Frenchtown Invitational before the meet was shortened by weather.

Logan Stephens won the long jump, setting the best mark in Class A this season with a leap of 21-4 1/2 to win the event. The Columbia Falls boys were in fifth place overall when the meet was called. Whitefish finished seventh and Polson eighth.

Polson’s Bea Frissell won the girls 1,600 by six seconds over Columbia Falls’ Kimberly Peacock to help the Polson girls to a seventh place finish. Columbia Falls finished fifth and Whitefish 13th.

Dillon led both the boys and girls standings when the meet was called.

Arcadia Invitational

ARCADIA, Calif. — In an event that saw the fastest time in the country this season, Glacier junior Annie Hill placed fourth in the 3,200-meter run at the Arcadia Invitational, finishing just short of a personal best.

Hill finished in 10:15.21, falling off the pace of the lead pack late in the race. Her performance was a second shy of her personal best in the event, run at last year’s Arcadia Invite in 10:14.14, the fastest time ever run by a Montana girl.

Malibu, California, sophomore Claudia Lane outlegged the nation’s top runner, Grandview, Colorado, senior Brie Oakley, to win the meet in a nation-best time of 9:57.52. Oakley finished second in 9:57.59.

Rio Rico, Arizona, senior Allie Schadler finished third in 10:05.70. Bozeman’s Camilla Noe was 10th in 10:26.05 and Hellgate’s Ella Degrandpre was 25th in 10:55.45.
