GREAT FALLS — Glacier and Flathead both dropped Class AA nonconference softball contests in the Electric City on Saturday to the Great Falls High Bison and C.M. Russell Rustlers.

Glacier lost 6-4 to Great Falls High and 9-0 to C.M. Russell.

“We have a lot of kids in new places and were relying on some new pitchers,” Glacier coach Andy Fors said.

“I was proud of them. I thought they showed a lot of grit.”

He said the Great Falls schools are two of the better AA teams in the state, which made for a challenge way to start the season.

“We got off to a little bit of a slow start,” Fors said against CMR.

“We dug ourselves a hole, down 9-0 after three innings. We did go the rest of the way without allowing a run.”

Emma Shew had Glacier’s lone hit in that contest, a single in the second inning.

Against Great Falls High, the game was tied 4-4 going into the seventh inning.

“That was a great game for us,” Fors said.

“Erin McHugh pitched a great game. A couple kids really stepped up for us.”

Like Alivia Atlee, who had a three-run home run in the first inning. And Shew, who scored off a single by Madison Johnson in the sixth inning.

Great Falls won it with a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning by Sarah Conway. It was her only hit of the game.

Glacier opens Western AA play on Tuesday at Missoula Sentinel and Big Sky.

Flathead could muster just one hit on the day, a single by Kylee Beccari, in a 16-0 loss to Great Falls High.

CMR’s Sam Payne and Madi Moore combined on a no-hitter in thumping the Bravettes 17-0. CMR opened that contest with a 10-run first inning.

Flathead begins Western AA play on Tuesday at Missoula Big Sky and Sentinel.
