Weather permitting, Flathead, Glacier on courts for crosstown tennis
When asked about today’s crosstown tennis dual on the courts at Flathead Valley Community College, Glacier coach Josh Munro offered one word — “hopefully.”
“The weather doesn’t look good, but yes I’m hopeful,” he said. “It’s looking rough for weather. Hopefully we can get some tennis in.”
The forecast is for a high temperature of 49 degrees, but with a 100 percent change of rain. Winds will vary from 5-8 miles per hour from the southwest.
The first Flathead versus Glacier dual of the spring is set to begin at 3 p.m.
“We seem to lose one of them every year (because of rain),” Munro said of the crosstown duals.
The two teams face off again on May 2.
“I’m kind of excited,” Flathead coach Sue Corrigan said for this one.
“We finally we have a full team. We’re healthy, they have their practices in and we’re playing people where they should be playing.”
Which means Corrigan will not have to move players in and out, or up and down in the lineup.
Corrigan said No. 1 singles players Kaylin Flaxman and Ridge Lembke will get their first action of the season today.
Glacier has dominated the series with the girls leading the Bravettes 13-0-1 and the boys holding a 13-1-0 mark on the Braves.
Munro said that while Flathead has had some strong individual players over the years, Glacier’s depth has been a big factor in the Wolfpack dominating the series.
“We’re not in the same division (as Flathead this year), so there is not as much pressure to get this in like in other years,” Munro said of today’s outing. “It doesn’t really change anything for us (with this crosstown), just less impact on (divisional) seeding. It opens up flexibility (for this dual) with what we do with our lineup.”
Glacier this year is in the Northern Division along with Great Falls High and Great Falls C.M. Russell.
Flathead is in the Western Division with Missoula Big Sky, Hellgate and Sentinel.
Glacier and Flathead are in different divisions once every four years.
“It’s one of those little weird circumstances,” Munro said.
“Tennis wise, we get along really well,” he said of the two schools for this event.
“(Crosstown) is more of a learning experience and an opportunity for all the kids to grow. It’s about building for divisionals and state.”
