Flathead, Glacier 0-4 vs. Helena

Flathead had to contend with a top pitcher in the first game, then had one bad inning in the second outing to drop two Western AA softball contests on Saturday afternoon at Kidsports Complex.

Terra Gilchrist tossed a 1-hitter as Helena High blanked the Bravettes 7-0 in the opener.

Bailey Nunn singled to center with one out in the first inning for Flathead’s lone hit.

Gilchrist had 12 strike outs and issued no walks.

Helena Capital used a five-run third inning to pull away from Flathead for a 10-3 victory in the second game.

Both teams tallied two runs in the first inning.

“She was pretty good,” Flathead coach Jack Foster said of Gilchrist. “We were hanging right in there.”

That game was scoreless after three innings.

Helena finally went on top 1-0 after four.

“Couple walks, a double by (Addie) Slanger, who drove in two runs there, and that kind of broke it open,” Foster said of the fifth for Helena.

That put Helena in front 3-0. The Bengals added a run in the six and three more in the seventh.

Foster adjusted his lineup versus Capital and the top of the order accounted for all six hits.

Riley Chouinard, in her first leadoff appearance, went 2-4. She singled in her first at-bat.

Bailey Nunn went 2-4 in the No. 2 spot. Kylee Meredith and Kaycee Smith, who were both 1-3, batted third and fourth.

Meredith and Chouinard both doubled.

“We’re a work in progress, making strides,” Foster said.

“The last three games we have been competitive, right there to have a chance,”

Capital tallied five runs in the third on three hits and three walks.

“That kind of put us down,” Foster said, “but we kept after them.”

Flathead (0-7 overall, 0-4 Western AA) faces Glacier on Thursday at Glacier.

Glacier came up short in Western AA play with the two visiting Helena schools.

Shelby Martin held Glacier to four hits and struck out eight as Capital blanked the Wolfpack.

She did not issue a walk in going the distance.

Two of Glacier’s hits were doubles — a leadoff shot by Addie Labrum in the first inning and one by Erin McHugh in the fourth.

“We didn’t have a lot of base runners in that game,” Glacier coach Andy Fors said.

“Capital is a solid team. We have to learn to play errorless defense to play with teams like that. We just didn’t get it done today.”

Glacier had four errors in that game.

Terra Gilchrist tossed a 2-hitter for Helena High as the Bengals thumped the Wolfpack. She fanned seven.

Anna Schrade homered for Glacier in the fourth inning to deep left with Alivia Atlee aboard. Atlee reached on a dropped fly to left field.

It was Schrade’s first homer of the season.

The other hit was a single by Sophie Smith.

Helena had three big innings, scoring five runs in the second and fourth innings and four in the fifth.

“Helena High was able to string some hits together today and take advantage of base runners,” Fors said.

“We were not (as fortunate).”

Glacier (0-6, 0-4) hosts Flathead on Thursday starting at 3 p.m.
