Man admits of attempt to run over officer

A 36-year-old man admitted on April 13 to his attempt to run over a peace officer in November 2016.

Jay Allen Nelson was originally charged with assault on a peace officer, but was able to plead down to a lesser charge of criminal endangerment, according to a plea agreement in Flathead District Court.

According to court documents, during a traffic stop in Flathead County, the driver of a vehicle jumped out and fled on foot into the woods. The sheriff’s deputy conducting the stop exited his patrol car, instructing the man to return to his vehicle.

The passenger of the stopped vehicle, identified as Nelson, reportedly hopped into the driver’s seat, put the car in reverse and backed up toward the deputy.

The deputy was forced to jump out of the way to avoid being struck. He then fired a round into Nelson’s tire in an attempt to disable the vehicle, but was unsuccessful.

Nelson was later arrested and taken into custody.

Judge Heidi Ulbricht revoked Nelson’s previously suspended sentence in connection to a burglary and theft charge.

Sentencing is set for June 15. If convicted, Nelson could face up to 10 years in prison and a $50,000 fine.
