Flathead, Glacier look for first win

It hasn’t been the best of starts for the Flathead and Glacier softball teams this spring.

Both teams are winless to start the season, the Wolfpack 0-6 and the Bravettes now 0-7. Glacier has been outscored 59-14 and Flathead 82-11.

One of the teams will stem that tide today when they meet for a doubleheader at the new fields at Glacier High School beginning at 3 p.m. today.

Flathead has been led by its small group of seniors starting over with its third head coach in four years.

Kaycee Smith has a team-best .357 batting average with a home run and five hits and Kylee Meredith is hitting .286 while leading the team in runs scored with a homer, a triple and a double this season. Kylee Becarri is back in the circle for a fourth straight season for the Bravettes and is in third in the Western Conference in strikeouts this season.

Glacier lost a talented group of seniors last year that made two straight title games and left a hole in the roster after graduation.

The Wolfpack has started to find some answers while trying to find consistency.

Junior Meg Hornby has a team-best .278 batting average and Alivia Atlee leads the team in power numbers with a home run, two doubles and six RBIs. Senior Erin McHugh, one of the team’s top returning power hitters, has three doubles this year.

McHugh, Emma Shew and Kali Gulick have split time in the circle, each with her own strengths.

Glacier has won the last two games of the series, though Flathead also notched its first win of the season last year against its crosstown foes. Glacier leads the all-time series 30-4.
