No. 24473 NOTICE for PUBLIC COMMENT SWANEY RANGE ALLOTMENT PROJECT ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT USDA - FOREST SERVICE Flathead National Forest Tally Lake Ranger District Flathead County, Montana The Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Swaney Range Allotment Project has been completed and is available for public review and comment. The project is located in the central portion of the Tally Lake Ranger District. There are three alternatives being proposed in this EA. Alternative A (Proposed Action) proposes to continue using current management but also includes new adaptive management strategies to address the issues. Alternative A would allow no more than 80 cow/calf pairs and two bulls from June 10 to September 30 each year in a seasonally deferred rotation system. This alternative also would include a reduction of 3217 acres in the upper Sheppard Creek watershed area but an addition of 5089 acres on the south side of Sheppard Creek. Finally, alternative A includes the installation of two or more off-channel water developments, building of approximately 1.4 miles of fence, installation of a cattle guard, additional stream channel monitoring, and the hardening of a stream crossing with the placement of gravels and rocks. In Alternative B (Current Management) the allotment size would continue as it exists currently which allows 80 cow/calf pairs and two bulls from June 10 to September 30 with no additional fencing, cattle guards, or stream monitoring. Alternative C (No Action) would discontinue the use of the allotment for cattle grazing. The EA and supporting documentation is available online at: http://www.fs.usda.gov/goto/ flathead/projects.
