Whitefish wants artists for snow sculpture symposium

The city of Whitefish is looking for teams of artists to participate in the first snow sculpture symposium planned for the final weekend of the Whitefish Winter Carnival, Feb. 2-4.

Participants will create a snow sculpture garden in Depot Park, reflecting the carnival theme of “Celebrating 70 years of Big Mountain.” This theme does not limit artists and their creative possibilities, but gives a good starting point on what could be created.

Starting Friday, Feb. 2, teams will work to create their sculptures, completing them by the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 4. The public is encouraged to visit the park during the creation of the sculptures throughout the weekend.

There will be a limit of nine teams in the symposium, made up of two to four people per team. Teams must submit and work from original designs only. Each team will be provided a cylinder of snow, 9 feet high by 6 feet wide in diameter.

The deadline to register is 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19. Teams will be notified of acceptance in the symposium on Monday, Jan. 22. Registration is free and more detailed information and registration forms can be found at http://www.cityofwhitefish.org/parks-and-recreation/staff-and-news.php.

This is a symposium, not a competition. The goal is to make Depot Park a winter centerpiece the community, showcasing the skills and abilities of Montana artists during the annual carnival celebration.
