Filing open for school trustee candidates
The filing period is open for people interested in becoming a school board trustee candidate.
The deadline to file paperwork is March 29, which includes a declaration of intent and oath of candidacy April 5 is the deadline for a write-in candidate to file a declaration of intent.
Paperwork may be obtained from and returned to a candidate’s respective school district.
Prospective candidates must be registered voters who have lived in the school district they wish to serve.
School elections will be held May 8. If the number of candidates after April 6 is equal to or less than the number of openings on a school board, districts may cancel elections and qualified candidates will be seated by acclamation.
Trustees are volunteers representing the public who are responsible for making decisions that impact how schools operate. Duties typically include setting achievement goals, reviewing and adopting policies, annual budgets and educational programs and holding schools accountable.
In Bigfork, Columbia Falls and Kalispell, trustees represent either the elementary or high school district. Elementary trustees vote on elementary and high school issues. High school trustees vote only on high school issues.
