Flathead rules Best of the West mats

PASCO, Wash. — Flathead ruled both days of the Best of the West wrestling tournament.
The Braves went 5-0 in the dual format on Friday and finished by claiming the team title on Saturday for the individual competition.
Flathead had 80 points more than runner-up Pasco for the team title on the final day in the 35-team field.
The Braves had five individual champions — Brendan Barnes (103), Bryce Schaffer (113), Payton Hume (160), Tucker Nadeau (182) and Michael Lee (285) and one runner-up — Hunter Wellcome (205).
“Hunter really impressed us with his offense this weekend,” Flathead coach Jeff Thompson said. “We are just really proud of how our wrestlers responded today after battling it through five duals yesterday. This team just loves to compete and the taste of the grind. This team is performing not only for themselves, but for their teammates. It’s a pretty special group.”
Barnes, Schaffer and Hume won their title matches by decisions, Nadeau by major decision and Lee by pin.
On Friday, Flathead beat Chiawana of Pasco 51-15, Baker City, Oregon, 57-18, Hanford, Washington, 62-10, and Newberg, Oregon, twice, 63-12 (second squad) and 34-33 in the final.
Flathead is the top-ranked Class AA team in Montana. Newberg is the No. 1 ranked team in Oregon.
Flathead is back in action Jan. 5-6 at the Northwest Classic in Spokane, Washington.
