Push for state wrestling starts this weekend

Daily Inter Lake

After countless duals and many full day tournament events, the final push has finally arrived for state prep wrestlers.

Two weekends remain on the schedule, starting with divisional and seeding tournaments this weekend.

State tournament action follows Feb. 10-11 in Billings.

Flathead enters the postseason as a favorite in Class AA. The Braves have accumulated an impressive 19-2 dual record while winning the Rocky Mountain Classic and CMR Holiday tournaments, placing second at the Pacific Northwest Classic in Spokane and AA Duals in Great Falls and third at the Mining City Duals.

Flathead is the top-ranked team in the AA coaches poll.

Flathead, along with Glacier, will be at the Western AA seeding tournament at Helena Capital on Saturday. The top eight wrestlers in each of the 13 weight classes advance to state.

No team totals are kept.

Columbia Falls, Polson and Whitefish head for Dillon and the Western A divisional today and Saturday.

Columbia Falls, seventh, and Polson, 10th, are ranked in the Class A coaches poll.

Columbia Falls will be shooting for its fifth-straight divisional championship.

The top eight wrestlers move on to state.

Bigfork, Eureka and Libby are in Arlee for the Western B/C divisional on Saturday.

Eureka, ranked No. 2 in the Class B coaches poll, will be going for its third-straight divisional crown. The Lions finished second at state last year.

Libby is ranked sixth in the poll.

The top four placers in all weight classes advance to state. Those placing fifth and sixth at divisionals may only qualify for state to fill bye positions.

Class AA

Flathead

The Braves a year ago qualified 22 for state.

This year, expectations are higher. The Braves hope to reach perfection.

“We, as a program, feel like an achievable goal is to qualify all 26 wrestlers,” Flathead coach Jeff Thompson said.

“We would like to see nine wrestlers in the finals.”

The Braves had four finalists last year in Missoula with Hunter Rush (103) and Trae Vasquez (120) both finishing first. Payton Hume (138) was second along with Payton Boyce (205).

Rush, Vasquez and Hume are back.

Vasquez is a two-time state champ, finishing 41-0 a year ago. He was the 112-pound state champion his freshman season. He’s the first FHS wrestler to win back-to-back titles since Shawn Lau in 2009-10.

Vasquez, who is wrestling up at 132 this season, is currently 22-2, 11-0 against AA competition. His match numbers are down this year because he has missed a few events because of a turf-toe injury he suffered this fall playing football.

Rush, a senior, is 26-4 at 103 and Hume is 32-6 at 152.

Hume missed out on last year’s state event because he did not have enough matches at his weight class. He was the top-ranked at 138, but also wrestled at 145, where he spent more than 50 percent of his match time. The time at 145 made him ineligible to compete at 138, the weight in which he qualified for state.

Flathead currently has four wrestlers with 30 or more wins — Hume, Tucker Nadeau (170) is 33-3, Matt Gash-Gilder (205) is 32-4 and Michael Lee (285) is 31-6.

“Payton Hume is really wrestling well right now and could win divisionals,” Thompson said.

“Trae is back and will put on a great performance. Hunter Rush, Michael Lee, Matt Gash-Gilder and Tucker Nadeau have great shots at winning divisionals.”

Of the 26 FHS wrestlers competing this weekend, only one has a losing record. Nine have won at least 20 matches.

“The toughest weights at seeding tourney for our wrestlers are 103, 126, 145 and 182,” Thompson said.

“All (weight classes) are tougher on the Westside, but we will wrestle up to the challenge to push through good seeds at state. The talk around the state is that this is the first year ever, since adding a AA divisional tourney, that the West is tougher than the East.”

Glacier

The Wolfpack had eight wrestlers qualify for state at last year’s seeding tournament, a number it hopes to match again. Surpassing that would be even better.

“We are excited to have the whole team show how far they have come this year,” Glacier coach Ross Dankers said.

“We have a lot of guys that it will be their first year at the seeding tournament, and so we just want them to go out on the mat and be fearless. We want to focus on the things we are good at, and the two things that are in our control — our attitude and effort.”

Glacier’s highest finisher at the seeding tournament last year was a fourth place, Tyler Eierdam (138).

Justin Gibson (138) is enjoying a banner season with a 34-5 mark. His win total is a team best.

Brandon Olsen (182) is next with 15 wins.

Sam Barber (160) had his season cut short because of a shoulder injury. He was 13-10.

“I’d like to give a big thanks of gratitude to our three seniors — Sam Barber, Brandon Olsen and Justin Gibson,” Dankers said.

“They started with me my first year as head coach four years ago. Those guys have worked so hard over the years and I know they are going to live lives of integrity and positively effect the communities they live in, which is what this is all about. I couldn’t be prouder of all of them and what they have done for the program.”

Regarding the seeding tournament ...

“I think the Western AA will be as deep as it has been for along time,” Dankers said.

“I think if you make it out of the seeding tournament in the West, you have an opportunity for success at state.”

Class A

Columbia Falls

The MatCats have one divisional champ returning, Mason Fetters (145). He pinned the third-ranked wrestler in the state in the divisional finals.

Fetters, who has 25 wins on the season, is wrestling this season at 152.

Winfield West (113), Hunter Peterson (132) and Storm Kemppainen (170) were division runners-up.

West is up to the 120-pound class while Peterson and Kemppainen have stayed at their weight classes.

Ben Windauer (145) has a team-high 30 wins this season. He shares the pin lead at 21 with Fetters.

Kemppainen has 28 wins followed by Peterson and West with 25 each.

West leads the team in major decisions with five.

“The best chances, on paper, for our wrestlers to win individual titles, stats wise, would be Winfield West, Ben Windauer and Jakob Freeman (182),” Columbia Falls coach Jessie Schaeffer said.

“However every wrestler that has put the time in and the discipline to be champion can make upsets happen. We want to go in and make upsets happen and win big matches that other teams and coaches have counted us out of.

“We are looking for great results from all 16 wrestlers that step on the mat this weekend,” he continued.

“High seeds this weekend will give us the best opportunity to stand on the podium next weekend and ultimately the season goal for these young men is the state tourney. Our goal is to leave Dillon with all 16 wrestlers qualified for the state tourney.”

Schaeffer said the weight classes that will be “exciting to watch” are 113, 132, which is loaded, 152, which has a returning state champion and returning runner-up, and 170, which has two returning state champions.

Austin Nelson (103) and Windauer (126) both finished third last year at divisionals at those weight classes.

Returning individual champions are Mateau Quinones (113), Bridger Wenzel (126) and Cameron Brown (138).

Parker Adler (145) was a runner-up in last year’s event. Koby Garcia (160) finished third and Noah Humphrey (182) took seventh.

Adler is currently 34-9. Quinones is 30-10.

“After wrestling most of the month of January without four or five of our best wrestlers, we have most of them back for the divisional tournament,” Polson assistant coach Bob Owen said.

“Brown just returned to the mats for the first time this season, winning his only match against Ronan last Saturday.

“This is a nice nucleus of veterans, but we have quite a few younger kids without divisional or state experience,” he continued.

“We are hoping to push as many of these younger troops as possible into the state as the experience will be invaluable to them next season.”

Whitefish

Three individual placers from last year’s divisional are back — Travis Catina (205) was third and Eli Taylor (120) and Malik Heydon (160) were both eighth.

Seniors Catina and Heydon are at the same weight class while Taylor is up one weight to 126.

“Travis Catina is our best chance of winning a divisional championship,” Whitefish coach Ryan Boyle said.

Catina is enjoying a banner season with a 32-4 mark. He leads the team in takedowns (68) and pins (21).

Taylor is 12-14 and Heydon 19-23.

Freshman Dakota Flannery (132) and sophomore Jack Eisenbarth (132) are 15-14 and 17-16, respectively.

Eisenbarth has 16 pins, second best for the Bulldogs with Heydon third with 12.

Heydon is second in takedowns (35) and tied for third in reversals (7).

Taylor leads in escapes (18) and Robert Bertelsen, a sophomore at 138, has the most reversals (19).

Whitefish will have five freshmen and three sophomores competing.

“I expect the team to wrestle at their best, attack everyone they face and not back down,” Boyle said.

“The seniors as a whole have stepped up this last month, and specifically in this last couple weeks. They have showed some true leadership. They are excited to compete at their last divisional tournament.”

Class B/C

Bigfork

The Vikings had two finalists, both finishing second — Connor Meyer (132) and Matt Farrier (160) — a year ago at divisionals. Farrier, a senior, is back at 170 this season.

Castor Conley (126) was third. He is wrestling at the same weight class.

As a team Bigfork was seventh.

No lineup, or other information, was available.

Eureka

The Lions return three divisional champions — Kahden Bakkila (120), Garrett Graves (170) and Joe Fehr (205).

Graves has moved up to 182 this season.

Placing second were Cannan Smith (145) and Kaelan Yanak (285).

Smith is now at 152.

“For the first time this season, we will have our full lineup together going into divisionals,” Eureka coach Danny Lemer said.

“I’m confident that they (Bakkila, Graves and Fehr) will repeat and be joined by Hank Dunn, James Dunn, Jonathan Schmidt, Cannan Smith and Kaelan Yanak as individual champs.”

Eureka has 11 returning divisional placers from 2016.

“Our goal will be to punch our full lineup of 16 through at divisionals.” Lemer said.

“I feel all 16 have a legitimate shot of placing in the top four and advancing to the state tournament.”

Graves has yet to lose this season in 33 matches.

Yanak, 35-1, and Hank Dunn (126), 35-7, are tied for the most wins.

Fehr is 33-3, Colby Hammack (170) 32-8 and Smith (152) 31-2.

James Dunn (145) is 17-3 and Jonathan Schmidt (138) 24-2.

Levi Garcia (160) 26-5 and Nathan Schmidt (113) 27-11 could both hit the 30-win mark on the weekend.

“I expect weight classes 113, 120, 152 and 170 to be very competitive,” Lemer said.

“I see 170 as being a slugfest with anyone capable of winning it and placing.

“James Dunn and Jonathan Schmidt are both wrestling very well and have a great shot of winning titles,” he added.

“They both missed part of the season due to injury but are healed now. Garrett Graves is undefeated and currently ranked No. 1 in the state. The way he has been working in the room and wrestling on the mat I don’t see anyone beating him this year.”

Lemer expects Ronan “to push” Eureka for the team title.

“They have numbers and some very tough wrestlers,” he said.

“Plains and Libby will also be bringing solid squads.

“Nothing is guaranteed come Saturday,” Lemer continued.

“The wrestlers who show up to battle and wrestle at their best will advance.”

Bakkila has a career mark of 121-35 (110 pins).

Also over the century mark are Hammack 105-69 (76), James Dunn 104-36 (66) and Graves 103-21 (70).

Yanak is close, 99-20 (81).

Graves is a junior, the rest are seniors.

Lions Divisional Lineup

103 — Austin Warren, fr., 8-11

138 — Jonathan Schmidt, jr., 24-2

Libby

The Loggers return three divisional runners-up — Buddy Doolin (103), Laine Young (138) and Clancy Gout (205). Reed Christensen (132) was third.

All are back at the same weight classes.

Doolin, a sophomore, is currently 35-7; Christensen, a senior, is 25-15; Young, a junior, checks in at 32-11; and Gout, a junior, is 24-18.

Only three individuals have a losing record.

“We are in a unique situation as we have a good group of talented wrestlers, but not a lot of them have experienced a lot of success in the postseason,” Libby coach Kelly Morford said.

“We simply didn’t wrestle well as a team at the divisional tournament last year (placing sixth), so it has been a focus of ours to better prepare ourselves for the end of the season. We have been ramping things up as the season comes to a close and hopefully that puts us in a good spot to compete at a high level at divisionals.”

Morford feels his divisional returnees should have a good showing.

“I think Buddy is probably the favorite to come out on top this weekend, but there are plenty of scrappy wrestlers in that weight class that can give him a run,” he said.

“(Doolin) has lofty goals for the end of this season, but he needs to keep focused on the match in front of him and take care of business like he knows how to do.

“Laine is another one that could have a shot at a title this weekend. There is a kid or two that have beat him already this season, but they were close matches and he can turn them around if he wrestles to his ability. There will be some fun matches to watch in that weight class.

“Beyond those guys, there are a handful that have an opportunity to make the finals, but anything can happen when there are so many tough matches to be wrestled.”

How will things stack up this weekend ... .

“We know we need to be ready as we have some tough teams and a lot of really talented wrestlers in our division,” Morford said.

“It is no easy task to get into the top four and make it to state out of our division.

“Eureka seems to have a really good wrestler at every weight class and then you have all of these other teams that have a bunch really good guys and good coaches. It makes for a real grinder of a tournament. When you start looking at some of these weight classes like 120 and 152, it doesn’t take long to count three or four really tough guys. That doesn’t leave a whole lot of room for other guys to sneak in there. One thing I know for sure, there are going to be a lot of good kids from the West that won’t be wrestling in the state tournament. It may not be a unique situation to our division, but it is also the hard truth. With all of that being said, we want our boys to know that they have been wrestling well themselves and if they just keep doing what they do, we will be in good shape. We have to go in with a good balance of having respect for the challenge but also with a lot well deserved confidence in ourselves.”

Loggers Divisional Lineup

103 — Buddy Doolin, so., 35-7

113 — Mason Sams, jr., 22-14
