The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes on Wednesday announced their endorsement of President Donald Trump’s nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court, Neil Gorsuch.

In a press release, tribal spokesman Robert McDonald said, “President Trump has nominated a judge who understands Indian law and the needs of Indian Country.”

Gorsuch faces Senate confirmation before he can assume the Supreme Court vacancy left by the death of former Justice Antonin Scalia. In the statement, the tribes urged Sens. Steve Daines, R-Mont. and Jon Tester, D-Mont., to vote for Gorsuch’s confirmation.

“CSKT thanks Senator Daines for his leadership role in Judge Gorsuch’s confirmation. We appreciate Sen. Daines making this a priority for his work in the Senate,” the release stated, adding, “And CSKT thanks Senator Jon Tester for his diligence in the confirmation process, meeting with Judge Gorsuch within a few days of his nomination.”
