Glacier grinds past Capital

The Glacier girls shut down Helena Capital on defense, holding the Bruins to five points in the first half in a 31-26 Western AA conference basketball win on Saturday afternoon at Glacier High School.

The Wolfpack (1-1 Western AA, 3-6 overall) had a strong first quarter, taking an 8-1 lead in the opening eight minutes, a lead it held throughout the game.

“It was a defensive effort for both teams,” Glacier coach Bill Sullivan said. “The girls responded and ended up with a win.”

Nikki Krueger scored a game-high 11 points and hauled in eight rebounds to lead Glacier.

Taylor Sullivan and Shelby Vanhemelryck each had eight points for Capital (1-1, 6-3).

Helena held Flathead scoreless in overtime, pulling away in a close Western AA conference game.

The Bravettes (0-2 Western AA, 5-5 overall) led in the first quarter and played back and forth for most of the game with Helena, but couldn’t connect in the extra session, missing every field goal attempt and two free throws.

Tiana Johnson scored 23 points and Kelsey Gillespie added 15 points for Flathead.

Kamden Hilborn led the Bengals (2-0, 7-1) with 23 points and Jamie Pickens had 17 points.

BIGFORK — Bigfork outscored Florence 18-11 in the fourth quarter to pull out the Class B nonconference victory.

Shae Anderson, making her third varsity start, knocked down a career high 17 points.

Haile Norred added 14 for Bigfork (6-4).

Bigfork capitalized at the free-throw line, sinking 19 of 28 attempts.

Rilee Mangun had 16 points for Florence (7-2).

Bigfork plays at Eureka on Thursday.

“The girls played hard from the tipoff to the buzzer,” Bigfork coach Jami Grende said.

“They play with a lot of heart, never give up.”

LIBBY — A second quarter surge led Libby to a blowout of Polson in a nonconference game.

The Loggers outscored Polson 18-8 in the second quarter and put a stamp on the game late, outscoring the Pirates 22-13 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Shannon Reny had 24 points to lead the Loggers (6-4) and Jayden Winslow added 14 points.

Mollie Fisher and Lauren Lefthand each had 11 points for Polson (1-9).

THOMPSON FALLS — Thompson Falls took control in the first half and ran away with a nonconference game against Whitefish.

The Blue Hawks (1-8) outscored Whitefish 29-15 in the first half and kept pace in the second half to secure the win.

Kit Anderson and Becca Catina had five points each for Whitefish (0-9), which saw nine players score.

GREAT FALLS — Stillwater Christian couldn’t find traction in the second half, falling behind in a Montana Christian Athletic Association loss to Great Falls Foothills Christian.

Foothills led 22-19 at half but pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Cougars 10-8 in the third quarter and 11-6 in the fourth.

Dori Smith led Stillwater (6-4) with 13 points and nine rebounds and Helen Hashley had 10 points.

HELENA — The Glacier boys took charge with a 17-4 run before the half and closed the game strong to remain undefeated in conference, topping Helena Capital in a Western AA game.

The Wolfpack (2-0 Western AA, 8-1 overall) fell behind in the first quarter 12-7, but charged back before halftime to take a 24-16 lead.

Capital regained some form in the third quarter, but Glacier was able to pull away in the fourth thanks to a hot shooting performance by Kody Jarvis, who had a game-high 20 points.

Bradley Haller had 12 points to lead Capital (0-2, 1-8).

HELENA — Flathead dominated Helena early and held off a late charge to finish a weekend sweep in the Capital City.

The Braves (2-0 Western AA, 6-4 overall) took a 17-8 lead in the first quarter and led 34-23 at halftime. They expanded the lead to 49-34 entering the fourth quarter.

Wyatt Potter and Tyler Johnson each had 20 points to lead Flathead.

Taylor England had a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds for Helena (0-2, 1-7).

BIGFORK — Florence won at the free-throw line in overtime to upset Bigfork in a Class B nonconference game.

Bigfork (8-2) couldn’t pull away from the Falcons (6-5), who were able to hang in the tight, physical game, pulling away in extra time.

“It was a hard battle,” Bigfork coach Sam Tudor said. “It came down to free throws at the end. (Tyce) Pedersen stepped up and hit four in a row and put us away.”

Logan Gilliard had 19 points to lead the Vikings and Anders Epperly had 15 points.

Marcus Zeiler led Florence with 19 points.

Sawyer Silliker scored 26 points to lead Whitefish and Derek Kastella added 20 points.

TROY — St. Ignatius dominated in the first and fourth quarters to pull away from Troy in a nonconference game.

The Bulldogs (1-6) picked up their first win this season with a 17-8 first quarter and later outscoring Troy 24-15 in the final eight minutes.

Dillon Savage scored 19 points and Mason Chapel had 16 points for Troy (1-6).

Elijah Calhoon led St. Ignatius with a game-high 21 points and three other Bulldogs hit double digit scoring.
