Montana health officials say outbreaks of influenza in the state are widespread as the flu season progresses.

Since surveillance for the influenza season began Oct. 2, there have been 1,086 reports of the flu in Montana as of Jan. 7, according to the Montana Department of Health and Human Services. Nearly 500 of those cases were reported within the first week of this month.

Health officials have said the actual number is likely higher because the figure only represents people who have seen health-care providers.

While Flathead County saw the largest number of flu reports last year, so far Missoula County has been hit the hardest this season with 156 cases. Close behind Missoula are Lewis and Clark, Cascade and Gallatin counties.

In the Flathead, there have been 101 cases confirmed so far this season.

Montana health officials warn residents to watch for flu symptoms, pointing to Washington state, which reached epidemic levels this month. As of Jan. 7, 48 people in Washington had died from the illness so far this season, according to the Washington State Department of Health.

State health officials say the flu vaccination is the best method of prevention. The flu shot is available right now at pharmacies and clinic locations throughout the state and takes up to two weeks to provide full protection. Other forms of prevention include covering your mouth when you cough, staying home from school or work when you are sick and washing your hands, officials added.
