Glacier tops Butte at weekend speech meet

Glacier High School Speech and Debate placed first this weekend in the final tournament before the state tournament.

Glacier defeated rival Bozeman 161.5 to 130.5 in overall points at the “Richest Hill on Earth” tournament in Butte. Flathead High School Speech and Debate edged out Missoula Sentinel for third place with 69 points.

The two-day tournament featured all 14 AA schools, plus Class A Butte Central.

“It is always exciting to win a tournament, especially by beating a very good Bozeman team,” Glacier Head Coach Greg Adkins said. “What is encouraging is that we know we can get better. I feel like we haven’t had our best tournament yet, and hopefully all of that will fall into place at the state meet in Bozeman.”

Flathead Head Coach Shannon O’Donnell is hoping also to make that final push.

“Overall the team struggled a bit this weekend, but we are looking forward to the next couple of weeks as we make our final push toward state,” O’Donnell said.

The Class AA state competition will be held Jan. 27-28 in Bozeman.

“I think we have set ourselves up for a great showdown with Bozeman in two weeks,” Adkins said.
