Swimming Babcock wins 2 events; Burnham breaks 2 records

MISSOULA — Colton Babcock of Columbia Falls was one of five double winners at the Missoula Invitational swim meet on Saturday at the Griz Pool.

Babcock had winning times in the 200 freestyle (1:44.48) and 100 butterfly (52.54).

Also winning two events were: Mari Aoki of Missoula Hellgate, 200 freestyle (1:56.19) and 100 backstroke (59.68); Adam Zimmer of Missoula Big Sky/Loyola, 200 individual medley (1:55.78) and 100 breaststroke (58.98); Cale Berkoff of Hellgate, 100 backstroke (53.20) and 500 freestyle (4:51.73); and Catherine Russo of Butte, 50 freestyle (24.35) and 100 butterfly (58.75).

Missoula Hellgate won the boys and girls team titles with Bozeman second in both.

Flathead/Glacier head coach David Lillard said two Glacier records were broken, there were at least 20 best times and “a lot of great swims, top places.”

Glacier senior Nate Burnham broke his own school records in the 100 (48.52) and 200 (1:47.40) freestyle. He was second in both events.

Also setting personal best times for Glacier were: Alicia Bernhardt and Selena Ikeda in the 200 free; Alex Bertrand, Tessa Howe and Keegan Mackenstadt in the 50 free; Ikeda and James Dittman in the 50 free; Meg Hornby in the 100 back; Howe in the 100 breast; and Dittman in the 100 back.

“Dittman had a great meet,” Lillard said. “Both of his events he broke a lot of time, made huge improvements in his stroke

For Flathead, best times were turned in by Maddie Huestis, Jenna Skonard and Hailey Fennell in the 200 free; Emily Cephars and Clay Skonard in the 200 IM; Shayenne Thompson and Gage Magone in the 50 free; Cephars in the 100 fly; Roxy Ward and Chance Ammiratta in the 100 free; Kaylee Kurkowski in the 100 back; and Jenna Skonard and Gustavo deSouza in the 100 breast.

“Maddie dropped nine seconds in the 500 free,” Lillard said.

“She did a good job of holding her pace. Every 50 was the same time. A great swim.

Overall …

“A lot of these kids got best times in both events,” Lillard said.

“They are working hard in practice and it is paying off for them.”

Whitefish’s Caroline Dye was third in the 200 freestyle.
