Kalispell to offer new high school courses

Several new courses will be offered at Flathead and Glacier high schools in 2017-18 school year.

At Glacier, there will some changes affecting Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

In the science department, the new calculus-based “AP Physics C-Mechanics,” will be offered every other year. It is a year-long course.

Also in the science department, “General Physics,” will be renamed “AP Physics 1.” It is a year-long course.

In the social studies department, “AP World History” will replace “AP European History,” and “Honors World History.” The new course is described as better preparing students for “21st-century world events,” covering a “wider scope of study.” It is a year-long course.

“Women in History,” was optioned to replace “Cultural Geography” as a “more relevant” course that “adds to a diverse offering” of electives. It is a semester-long course.

In business curriculum students may learn entry-level coding in the semester-long course titled “Coding 101.”

“Debate” will be added to the roster of English courses for students “to learn debate other than through extracurricular activities.” It is a semester-long course.

The Project Lead the Way capstone course to Glacier’s Engineering Academy will also be offered in the 2017-18 school year.

At Flathead, “Foundations of Leadership,” a semester-long course will be added to the roster of health and P.E. classes. Students will learn the principles of servant leadership and group leadership skills.

In the business department, “Academic and Career Exploration 1” will be offered to “introduce students to their future after high school” through goal setting, career exploration and development of a “financial foundation.” It is a semester-long course.

History students will be offered a new, semester-long course titled “Historical Geography.” Students will be introduced to physical geography and how it shapes events, people and places throughout time.
