Glacier beats on Hellgate in mat dual

What better way to conclude a prep career in your final home wrestling dual of the season than with a pin.

Glacier seniors Justin Gibson (138) and Brandon Olsen (183) did just that on Tuesday as the Wolfpack whipped Missoula Hellgate 57-18 in a Western AA dual.

Gibson stuck Asa Hoerner in 3:50 while Olsen put Jake Wilson away in 55 seconds.

Glacier’s other senior, Sam Barber, was unable to see any action for this one. He injured his shoulder during football and wrestled with that until recently, when it was too painful for him to continue.

Last year he missed out on divisionals and state because of a concussion. Barber was one match away from placing at state his sophomore season.

“The boys did a great job tonight being aggressive, moving forward and putting on a show for the home crowd on senior night,” Glacier coach Ross Dankers said.

“I’m really proud of the work that these kids have put in throughout the year and seeing the improvements that we have made. I’m really excited for the end of the season.”

Glacier closes regular-season action on Saturday with a double dual in Helena versus Helena High and Capital.

Divisionals and state follow in February.

Against Hellgate, Cole McCollam (132), Adam Hussein (145), Andrew Glynn (152), Spencer Stubbert (205), Ashton Thompson (285) and Dylan Miller (103) also had pins.

The dual opened at 120 with Caden Willis posting a major decision over Hellgate’s Conner May, 16-2.

Columbia Falls 60,

Whitefish 10

COLUMBIA FALLS — Pin and forfeits accounted for all of the scoring for Columbia Falls as the MatCats dominated the Northwest Dual with Whitefish.

Columbia Falls had six pins — Austin Nelson (113), Winfield West (120), Ayden Role (126), Hunter Peterson (132), Brandon Thomas (138) and Colton McPhee (160). Ben Windauer (145), Mason Fetters (152), Storm Kemppainen (170) and Kyler Koski (285) all won by forfeit.

Jackson Carson (103) had a pin and Travis Catina (205) won by major decision to account for all of Whitefish’s scoring.

“He has been wrestling really well lately,” Whitefish coach Ryan Boyle said of Catina.

“He hasn’t lost a match in a couple of weeks.”

Catina, a senior, won by major decision over Jakob Freeman, 17-6.

Freeman, who normally wrestles at 182, moved up a weight class for this dual to get some mat time to avoid forfeits at 182 and 205.

“I was proud of Freeman for doing that,” Boyle said.

Carson, a freshman, pulled off a big win with a pin in 4:42 of Garret Salminen.

Carson was nearly pinned twice earlier in the match.

“He (Salminen) was trying to cradle Jackson again,” Boyle said.

“He (Carson) swam an arm through, the kid was on his hip, he got him on his back and finished really well. I’ve never seen him quit, or give up.”

He said Carson tips the scales at 90 pounds, which means he give up 10 pounds or so for every match.

Bigfork, Eureka and Libby will compete in the Whitefish Invitational on Friday at 1 p.m.
