LAUREL — Kalispell’s Teigan Avery attacked the course at Laurel Golf Club on Friday, shooting a round three strokes better than any other competitor to pull out to a five-stroke lead after two rounds at the Montana State Women’s Amateur golf tournament.

Avery, who won two individual state championships at Glacier High School, closed her opening nine holes with six straight pars and a birdie on the ninth. The Griz sophomore then hit a pair of birdies on the back to play even par on the way in, finishing at 1-over-par 73 on the day. That was enough to eclipse first-round leader Kyla Clancy by seven strokes and was 10 strokes better than Libby’s Jackie Mee, who entered the day one stroke back of Avery in third place.

Only Townsend’s Anna DeMars was able to keep close with Avery, shooting 4-over-par in the second round after carding a pair of birdies on the front nine. DeMars enters the final day of play trailing Avery by five strokes.

Clancy is six strokes back in third place and Mee fell into a tie for sixth at 16-over-par 160.

Libby’s Bobbie Lacklen made a move toward the top of the leaderboard in the women’s Senior Am, shooting an 85 to vault into second place, three strokes back of Condon’s Helene Michael in the lead.

First round leader Sue Matson fell back to the pack in a tie for second with Lacklen at 24-over 168. Helena’s Susan Court is also within shooting distance in fourth place at 169.

At the men’s State Am in Missoula, Anaconda’s Caleb Stetzner shot a 6-under-par 65 in the second round at the Missoula Country Club to jump into the lead at 7-under for the tournament.

Billings’ Joey Moore, the first round leader, was steady with a 2-under 69 to stay within reach in second at 6-under 136, with Billings’ Sean Benson and Hamilton’s Payton Taylor tied for third one stroke back.

A group of local players is 11 strokes back in a tie for 10th. Bigfork’s Joseph Potkonjak and Whitefish’s Brad Grattan and Mark Mance are each at 4-over-par entering the final day of play.
