Kalispell's Avery wins State Women's Am

LAUREL — Kalispell’s Teigan Avery held off the field in the final round to win the 100th Montana State Women’s Amateur golf tournament on Saturday at Laurel Golf Club.

Avery didn’t make a birdie in her final round but didn’t need to, finishing at 5-over-par and maintaining a five-stroke lead she held entering the day, closing out the victory with a 10-over 226 for the tournament. Townsend’s Anna DeMars finished second at 15-over 231 and Butte’s Shealyn Hafer was third after closing with the low round of the day, shooting 2-over to finish at 16-over 232.

“I eked by on a lot of birdie putts,” Avery said.

“I was just trying to grind out some birdies, unfortunately nothing happened today. That’s all I was focused on: hitting fairways, hitting greens and making putts.”

Avery, a Griz sophomore and two-time high school individual Class AA state champion at Glacier, made six pars and three bogeys on the front nine and began to feel some heat from DeMars, who closed her front nine with back-to-back birdies to get within two strokes of the lead. Avery steadied her round on the back, however, shooting par on her first five holes as DeMars dropped two strokes.

“She got it to within two,” Avery said. “That scared me a bit, for sure, she’s a good golfer. I knew that I had to focus on my own game and let her make her own mistakes and make sure I didn’t make any for myself.”

Avery virtually sealed the win on the 16th, following up her first bogey on the back with a par, only for DeMars to double bogey the hole. Avery played the final three holes one over to secure the victory.

“(Hole No.) 16 definitely helped me breathe a bit more,” Avery said. “I was feeling confident the whole back nine. I made sure I kept in my own game to make sure that confidence was well founded.”

It’s the first win in the tournament for Avery, who finished second last year.

“It’s really awesome,” Avery said. “I won the centennial Women’s State Am. It’s a tournament I’ve been wanting to win for a while. I’m really happy that it finally happened.”

Libby’s Jackie Mee finished in a tie for sixth at 23-over 239 after a final round score of 79. Polson’s Kaycee Kennedy finished in a tie for 22nd.

Laurel’s Sue Matson ran away from the field on her home course to win the Women’s Senior Am by four strokes with a 248 score.

Matson started the day three strokes back in a tie for second, but tamed the course in the final round, shooting 8-over 80 to easily eclipse second-round leader Helene Michael, who finished at 252. Helena’s Susan Court finished third and Libby’s Bobbie Lacklen, who was tied with Matson entering the final round, fell to fourth place. Whitefish’s Karen Jacobson finished in seventh place.

Anaconda’s Caleb Stetzner held off the field at the Men’s State Am in Missoula, firing a final round even par 71 to finish at 7-under-par 206 for the tournament, two strokes better than Billings’ Sean Benson and Hamilton’s Payton Taylor.

Whitefish’s Mark Mance finished tied for eighth at 4-over 217 and Whitefish’s Brad Grattan was one stroke back of that in a tie for 10th.
