Open casting Saturday in Kalispell for indie movie

The producers of the new independent movie “Useless” are holding an open casting call Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Kalispell.

The film is an independent, non-union feature from Josiah Burdick, whose movie “Silk Trees” debuted last month at the Bigfork Independent Film Festival. “Useless” is the story of a girl who loses a parent and navigates her grief by pursuing her love of barrel racing with a horse everyone else has deemed is useless.

Actors for featured, supporting and the lead roles are being cast on Saturday. Most roles are unpaid although some actors will receive a nominal fee. Actors of all ages are encouraged to attend, even if a role (listed below) does not match their age. Extras and featured extras will also be cast.

The auditions will take place at the film’s production office, 1005 Eighth Ave. E. in Kalispell. The film is scheduled to shoot during the third week of July, the last two weeks of August and the first week of September this year.

AVAILABLE ROLES

Jessie (lead): Female, 16- to 19-year-old girl. Quiet but decisive.

Mick (supporting): Male, mid 40s to late 50s; uncle to Jessie. Soft-hearted and kind. A people-person, likes to tease, jack-of-all-trades.

Amy (supporting): Female, mid 40s to late 50s; aunt to Jessie. Has a focused drive and is task-oriented. Compassion isn’t her strong suit but is deeply loyal.

Amber (supporting): Female, mid 30s to late 50s; owns the massive ranch near Mick and Amy’s home. Trains horses for a living. Has a “say it like it is” personality but is soft deep down.

Martha (featured): Female, mid 30s to late 40s; single mother to Jessie. Passionate, driven, well-loved, loves life and, most of all, her daughter.

Kyle (featured): Male, 16 to 19; Schoolmate and Jessie’s only real school-aged friend. Writer, somewhat intellectual, doesn’t care about peer-pressure.

Hayley (featured): Female, 14 to 18; schoolmate of Jessie. Spoiled and preppy.

Lindsey (featured): Female, 14 to 18; schoolmate of Jessie. Spoiled and preppy.

Kenzie (featured): Female, 14 to 18; schoolmate of Jessie’s. Spoiled and preppy.

Jim Benson (featured): Male, early 50s to late 60.

Operator (featured): Male, mid 20s to late 30s.

Foreman (featured): Male, late 40s to late 60s.

Lady Rancher (featured): Female, late 40s to late 60s.

Old Woman (featured): Female, late 60s to late 70s.
