Step into summer, but do it safely

| June 30, 2017 4:00 AM

Summer has officially arrived in the Flathead Valley.

Locals and tourists alike are out enjoying Northwest Montana in all her splendor, but outdoor recreating comes with risks. And while the sun, warmth and long days are welcome, the hazards of the season have also kicked into high gear.

It’s already been a busy season for local law enforcement and first responders. Two hikers who have gone missing in the last month have been found alive, thanks in large part to local and regional first responders and search-and-rescue crews. A man who lost a foot in a boating accident didn’t lose his life because of our local responders. Fast-acting firefighters have stopped grass and structure fires before they could become a larger problem.

We are thankful for the work of our local law enforcement and first responders.

But there are some things everyone can do to lighten their load this season and keep yourself, and each other, safe.

More road traffic means an increased chance of accidents. All motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians should plan to take extra time when out on the roads during the summer months. Look out for each other and share the roads. Never, ever drive while drunk.

Area lakes, rivers, reservoirs and other waterways are also a popular shared space this time of year. Even though we have so far avoided flooding after a record run of precipitation early in the year, be aware that water is still high and fast. Be prepared for those conditions — a life vest can literally be the difference between life and death.

Hikers, climbers, off-road ATV riders and anyone else recreating outside should also be prepared for changing and unexpected conditions. Solo trips aren’t recommended, but if you must go it alone at least tell someone where you are going and when you plan to return. Wear safety gear appropriate for your activity, and bring extra supplies. And bear spray.

We want everyone to enjoy what the Montana summer has to offer, and stay safe while doing it. Happy July!
