No. 24336 PUBLIC NOTICE OLD STEEL BRIDGE GRAVEL PIT OPERATION SECTION 3 AND 10, T28N, R21W FLATHEAD COUNTY OPERATOR: FLATHEAD COUNTY ROAD DEPARTMENT 1249 Willow Glen Drive Kalispell, MT 59901 758-5790 fax 758-5794 The Flathead County Road Department proposes to amend their existing 20.5-acre gravel pit on the above described land to add an additional 29.1 acres, which it will acquire from Knife River. The land being added is currently under an adjacent mining permit operated by Knife River. Knife River will deduct this 29.1 acres from its permit. The County currently owns the land where their permit is located and is purchasing the 29.1 acres from Knife River. The County operates a crusher and an asphalt plant at this location. Knife River is permitted to operate a concrete plant on the acreage they are relinquishing, but the County will not process concrete. Access to the site is gained directly from Holt Stage Road and no changes are proposed. The pit would be operated intermittently from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Monday through Saturday to provide itself aggregate products and hot road mix for County road construction and maintenance as needed. The site has been operated since the early 1970's and would continue to operate off and on over the next 35 years. Much of the gravel has already been removed from this site but in total it could extract as much as 1.4 million cubic yards of material. Of that volume, approximately 160,000 cubic yards are soils and overburden that covered the gravel and facility area, and which would remain on site for reclamation. The rest would be sand and gravel products. All soil and overburden would be stripped off and saved for reclamation and planted back to pasture grass when mining and processing are completed. Facilities that move in and out could include a crusher, asphalt plant, screens, dozers, scrapers, haul trucks, fuel trucks, road watering and other equipment typical of road construction. The full application can be seen on the DEQ Opencut Website by going to https://searchopencutpermits.mt.gov/ and entering permit #519 in the search field. March 12, 15, 2017 MNAXLP
