Forecast could dampen record-setting pace at Archie Roe Invitational

A forecasted light drizzle and temperatures in the 50s could put a damper on some of the record times that have fallen at the Archie Roe Invitational the last few seasons, but it won’t lessen the excitement as 15 of the best teams from the region converge today on Legends Stadium for one of the last big meets before the postseason.

Three records were broken last year, and a few of those athletes are scheduled for another shot at setting a record time.

Glacier junior Annie Hill set the record in 1,600-meter run two years ago (4:49.65), and has the fastest time in the state this year (4:49.06). Hill also has state-best times in the 800 (2:11.73) and 3,200 (10:28.26) and is third in 400 (59.00).

One of the girls to run faster than her this year in the 400 is Bigfork’s Haile Norred (58.87), a junior speedster who also holds the best 200 mark in Class B (26.41).

Fellow Valkyries junior Bryn Morley should also push Hill in the distances, should they meet, with the state’s second-fastest time in the 1,600 (4:53.04) and third-fastest in the 3,200 (10:55.60).

Hellgate sophomore Ella Degrandpre also has top 10 times in both of the distances.

In the field, Glacier’s Nikki Krueger is a foot longer than any other shot putter in the state (41-2), but should get a push from Frenchtown’s Adeline Richardson (37-7.5) and Emilie Hinrichs (37-7),

Glacier’s Abi Fiske has the sixth-best triple jump in the state this season and Columbia Falls’ Angellica Street has the third-best javelin throw in Class A.

While not as many top-end duels in the boys races, there will be plenty of top athletes to watch, especially from Kalispell.

Glacier has dominated the sprints this season, and proved its depth at this meet last season, setting the meet record in the 4x100 meter relay on the way to winning the event at state. The team brings back all but one runner from that team and has the second fastest time in the state this year (43.21).

Of those runners, junior Drew Turner is second in the state this year in the 200 (22.36), fifth in the 100 (11.12) and eighth in the 400 (50.53). Junior Ethan Larson is third in the 100 (11.06) and senior Tyler Combs is ninth in the 400 (50.87).

The Glacier 4x400 relay is third in the state this season (3:28.74), one spot ahead of crosstown rival Flathead (3:29.85).

The Braves have been consistently strong in the longer distances, with senior Jaden Anderson posting the sixth-fastest time in the 800 (1:58.55) and the 1,600 (4:26.60). Sophomore Ben Perrin has the seventh-fastest time in the 1,600 (4:26.63) and third in the 3,200 (9:29.79).

Braves juniors Dawson Rinehart and Chad Hemsley have been at the top of the state in the hurdles, with Rinehart holding the state’s fourth-best time in the 300 hurdles (39.93) and Hemsley the sixth (40.65).

In the field, Glacier junior Hunter Nicholson set third-best mark in triple jump last weekend (43-11), edging the mark by Flathead’s Andy Thomas (43-7.25), now fourth.

Thomas and teammate Micah Bucy are two of seven athletes in state to clear 6-5 this season in high jump. Nicholson cleared 6-4.

Columbia Falls’ Dakota Bridwell has the third best javelin mark in the state and the tops in Class A (189-5). Glacier’s Tadan Gilman is sixth in the state and second in Class AA (181-6)

Thompson Falls’ Kade VanElswyck is third in Class B in the javelin and top 10 in the state (179-3) and the Blue Hawks’ McKenzie Holt is seventh in discus (163-4). Losha Schroeder is tied for fourth in shot put (14-0), but first in Class B.

The meet is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
