Glacier grads Fraley, Hulslander make track history for Gonzaga, Air Force

Glacier High School graduates Troy Fraley and Taylor Hulslander made history on Friday.

Fraley, a senior at Gonzaga, shattered his own school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase while setting the fastest time in the NCAA this season.

Hulslander, a senior at the Air Force Academy, broke the academy record in javelin by 13 feet to move into the top 15 throwers in the nation.

Fraley finished fourth overall at the Payton Jordan Invitational on the campus of Stanford University, only behind three professional runners in the field of 25.

His time of 8:39.30 is more than a second faster than any other Division I runner this season and shaved nearly six seconds off his personal best and program record set earlier this year.

Just this season, Fraley has shaved nearly 17 seconds off his school record in the event.

“This was the greatest performance to date in Gonzaga track and field history,” Director of GU Track Pat Tyson said to Gonzaga sports information.

Fraley will likely enter the NCAA West Preliminaries the top-seed in the event on May 25-27 in Austin, Texas. It would be his second appearance at the prelims.

The Bulldog men have had a representative in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA West Preliminaries in each of the past three seasons.

Hulslander’s throw highlighted the Air Force Twilight Open in Colorado Springs.

On his third throw of the day, he launched a career-best javelin of 236 feet, 6 inches, besting his previous top mark by nearly 20 feet.

The mark, which stands as 13th best in the NCAA this season, topped the 18-year-old academy record by 13 feet.

It was the third-best throw in Mountain West Conference history.

The collegiate track postseason begins next weekend with most schools taking part in conference championships.
