Johnston defends Division 3 Tournament golf title

BOZEMAN — Another tournament, another title for Libby’s Ryggs Johnston.

The sophomore defended his Division 3 Tournament golf title on Monday by carding a 7-under 65 to finish eight shots ahead of runner-up Bucky Crippen of Missoula Loyola.

Dylan Beckman of Thompson Falls and Colton Stodghill of Bigfork tied for third with 76s.

Townsend turned in a 320 score to claim team honors.

Manhattan, 334, was second, Missoula Loyola, 335, third, and Libby, 345, fourth.

Johnston shot a 6-under 66 last year at Old Works Golf Club near Anaconda to win the Division 3 Tournament by four shots.

Kylie Esh of Loyola shot a 3-under 69 for medalist honors in girls play on Monday.

Makayla Rowan of Three Forks and Katie Fagg of Loyola tied for second with 83s.

Loyola captured the team title with a 348 score. Three Forks, 351, was second, Thompson Falls, 397, third, and Bigfork and Anaconda, with 430 totals, tied for fourth.

The top four teams advance to state (Bigfork won the tie-breaker over Anaconda) along with the top 15 lowest scores.

The state tournament is May 16-17 in Shelby at the Marias Valley Golf Course.
