C-Falls' Jones wins Big Sky jav

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — University of Montana senior Daniel Jones uncorked the longest throw of his career in the best possible moment, winning the Big Sky Conference javelin championship on Saturday on the campus of Sacramento State University.

Jones, a Columbia Falls graduate, won it with a distance of 65.74 meters (215 feet, 8 inches) on his second attempt at the Big Sky outdoor track championships, winning the event by more than 13 feet.

Griz junior Matt Quist (Flathead) finished second in the high jump, clearing 2.08 meters (6-9 3/4) to help the Montana men finish in seventh place as a team. Montana State was fifth.

Montana junior Emily Cheroske (Bigfork) was seventh in the 800 on the final day and fourth while running the third leg for the Griz 4x400 relay team.

The Griz women finished second behind Northern Arizona. Montana State was fifth.

Morley second at

Pac-12 outdoors

EUGENE, Ore. — University of Colorado freshman Makena Morley (Bigfork) placed second in the women’s 10,000- meter final at the Pac-12 Conference outdoor track championships, one of a handful of Montana athletes to make an impact at Oregon’s historic Hayward Field.

Morley trailed only teammate Erin Clark, finishing in 33 minutes, 29.22 seconds.

Billings’ Christina Aragon, a freshman at Stanford, was fourth in the prelims for the women’s 800, advancing to today’s finals after finishing in 2:07.10. Washington State junior Marlow Schulz (Whitefish) just missed the cut on advancing, placing ninth in 2:09.09. Eight runners advance to the finals.

Colorado junior Zach Perrin (Flathead) finished eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase crossing the line in 9:06.39. Buffs teammate Chris Herrick (Hellgate) was 12th.

Perrin will compete in the 5,000-meter run today.

Of the other Montanans at the meet, Washington State senior Liz Harper (Sentinel) advanced to the finals of the women’s 400 hurdles, finishing seventh in prelims. Washington sophomore Chase Smith (Helena High) finished fourth overall in the pole vault. Stanford junior Colin Dolese (Hellgate) finished 12th in men’s 400 hurdles and missed qualifying.

Hulslander second

in Mountain West

LOGAN, Utah — Air Force Academy senior Taylor Hulslander (Glacier) placed second in the javelin at the Mountain West Conference outdoor track championships, helping the Falcons take a second straight team title.

Hulslander’s top throw was 67.94 meters (222 feet, 11 inches). Utah State’s Sindri Gudmundsson, who unleashed a toss of 77.19 meters (253-3) on his second throw —the third longest in the nation this season — won it. Hulslander has a top 15 throw in the nation this season.

Fraley wins at

Portland Twilight

PORTLAND, Ore. — Gonzaga senior Troy Fraley (Glacier) won the 5,000-meter run at the Portland Twilight meet on Saturday.

Fraley, who set the fastest time in the country in the steeplechase his last time out, cruised to a win over a field of college and pro athletes finishing in 13:57.58 to win by two seconds.

Though it is the end of the regular season, he is qualified to run in the NCAA West Prelims at the end of the month in Austin, Texas.
