The Kalispell Lakers dropped a Class AA American Legion baseball doubleheader to the Helena Senators at Griffin Field on Saturday afternoon.

Helena rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to win the opener 7-6.

The Senators rolled in the second outing, winning 7-1.

“A solid first game,” Kalispell coach Ryan Malmin said.

“Drew (Scherrer) threw well. We were one out away from a 6-4 win. We just need to finish, whether it’s making a pitch, a play or me pushing the right buttons.”

Malmin said the Lakers were always battling from behind in the second game.

In the opener, the bulk of the scoring was in the first inning with Kalispell on top 4-3.

Scherrer pitched eight innings. He allowed four runs, gave up eight hits, walked two and fanned six.

Torin Bowden, Dawson Smith, Spencer Pisk and Jonas Nyman had two hits each to account for all of Kalispell’s hits.

Bowden doubled while Smith and Nyman belted triples.

Kalispell could muster just five hits in the second game — all singles by five different players.

The Lakers are back in action today versus the Bitterroot Red Sox A for a nonconference doubleheader at Griffin Field beginning at 1 p.m.
