Whitefish netters spill Stevi in dual finale

WHITEFISH — Whitefish tuned up for this week’s Northwestern A divisional tennis action in Polson and Ronan by sweeping Stevensville in a Class A nonconference dual on Saturday at the Flathead Valley Community College courts.

The Whitefish boys rolled to a 7-0 triumph while the Whitefish girls prevailed by a 5-2 scored.

“We’re in good shape, right where we want to be going into the tournament,” Whitefish boys coach Chris Schwaderer said.

“The kids are sharping their skills, we’re figuring where everyone will fit in. We’ll try our best to defend our divisional title from last year. It will be a battle with Polson.”

Eric Holdhusen, Noah Fauth and Colter Upton all won 6-0, 6-0 at Nos. 1-3-4 singles.

Travis Catina and Zach Brandt won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles.

The Whitefish girls were 4-0 in singles play and picked up a win at No. 2 doubles.

Stevensville’s Shelby Spokas and Jackie Westman outlasted Whitefish’s Holly Hileman and Melissa Pollard 7-6 (2), 6-7 (4), 6-2.

“A well-played match,” Whitefish girls coach Patrick Dryden said.

“A little bit over 2 1/2 hours. Stevensville pulled away in that third set.”

Whitefish finished the dual season with a 13-2 mark. The losses were to Havre and Dillon.

Divisional play starts Tuesday and ends Wednesday. Boys are in Ronan and the girls in Polson.

C-Falls splits with Stevi

COLUMBIA FALLS — The Columbia Falls boys won all four singles matches and No. 2-3 doubles for a dominating 6-1 Class A dual nonconference victory.

Garrett Caffrey won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

The Stevensville girls slipped by Columbia Falls 4-3.

Molly Schmit, Sammi Mueller, and Anna Pickard won singles matches for Columbia Falls.

It was the final match of the regular season for both schools.

Northwestern A Divisional play starts Tuesday and ends Wednesday for Columbia Falls. Boys are in Ronan and the girls in Polson.

MISSOULA — Jake Treece of Missoula Sentinel and Olivia Panarella of Missoula Hellgate won singles titles on the final day of the event that was stretched to three days because of weather delays.

Also competing were Missoula Big Sky and Flathead.

No team scores were kept.

The top four singles players and doubles team advance to the Class AA state tournament, which begins Thursday at Flathead Valley Community College.

Flathead did not qualify anyone for state.
