It was smooth sailing for Polson on the first day of the Class A state tennis tournament on Thursday at Flathead Valley Community College.

Pirates seniors Cassie Carlyle and Colin Kenney cruised into the singles semifinals and both the boys and girls each have a doubles team in the semis. The Polson boys also have a doubles team still playing in the consolation bracket.

“When your in the semifinals in every division, you have to be pleased with that,” Polson coach Bob Hislop said.

“Obviously in a tournament atmosphere like this you have to come (Friday) and do the work otherwise today is not going to be as big of a deal. We’ve got some tough matches ahead of us but we have to see who we can get into the finals and then let the chips fall where they may for trophies.”

Carlyle dominated her two matches, beating Corvallis’ Emma Pickett 6-0, 6-1 in the first round and Hardin’s Brittney Schaff 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

“It doesn’t sound close in the scores, but each game was long and super fun to play,” Carlyle said.

Carlyle will play Whitefish’s Paint Intasuk in the semis. Intasuk edged Dillon’s Mariah McClure 7-5, 6-3 in the first round and won in three sets 6-0, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5) over Hardin’s Madisan Chavez in the quarterfinals.

The two played in the Western A semifinals last week with Carlyle beating Intasuk in three sets 6-0, 3-6, 6-2, to remain unbeaten on the year.

“It was the hardest match I’ve played this season,” Carlyle said.

Kenney slugged through his first round match with Corvallis’ Gabe DeLeo, winning 7-6 (7-5), 7-5, and then rolled Livingston’s Jakim Ricketts 6-1, 6-4 to get to the semifinals.

Whitefish’s Eric Holdhusen is still playing in the boy singles consolation bracket and the Bulldogs’ Hannah Madsen is in the girls consolation bracket.

The Polson duo of Matt Sitter and Cadis Chowning is into the semifinals after winning a close 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 match in the quarterfinals. Teammates Jaron Morgan and Kaiden Forman-Webster are still playing in the consolation bracket.

Olivia Hewston and Kyler Lundeen routed a pair of two-set matches to advance to the girls doubles semifinals. Whitefish’s Paige Sproul and Cailyn Ross are still alive in the consolation bracket.

Play concludes today.
