BUTTE — The Glacier girls got off to a good start on a record-setting first day at the Class AA state track and field meet on Friday at Charlie Merrifield Track.

Wolfpack junior Annie Hill won the 1,600-meter championship by dusting the field in 4 minutes, 54.61 seconds, topping second place by nearly seven seconds. It is her first title at the distance after runner-up finishes the last two seasons.

Hill also finished second in the 400, behind Billings West’s Maddie Brockel.

Glacier senior Nikki Krueger won the shot put title with ease, finishing with a best throw of 42 feet, 1 1/2 inches to top the field by more than four feet. Wolfpack senior Brynn McChesney couldn’t defend her long jump title, finishing third.

The Bozeman girls hold a heavy lead in the standings with 54 points, aided by a podium sweep in the high jump. Missoula Sentinel with 39 and Glacier at 38 1/2 are second and third.

Billings West is in fourth place despite winning three events on the opening day, setting an all-class state record in the 4x100 relay by finishing in 48.18 seconds, topping the 38-year-old record set by Great Falls C.M. Russell at 48.30 seconds in 1979. The Bears also won the 400 and pole vault.

Flathead is in 11th place with four points after sophomore Madde Boles finished fourth in high jump, clearing the second highest bar, but falling out of the top three on a tiebreaker.

The Glacier boys fell just short of winning their third straight 4x100 relay title, losing to Billings Senior by two hundredths of a second.

Three all-class state records were set in the boys races on the first day, led by Helena freshman Trey Tintinger, who won the high jump by clearing a height of 7-1 1/2. The mark would be a world record for a 14-year-old had he made the leap at a U.S. Track and Field-sanctioned event.

Helena senior Zander Mozer won the 400 by setting a new record in 47.52 seconds and Senior’s Dawson LaRance won the 800 in a record time of 1:50.22, breaking an all-class mark that had stood since 1986.

West leads the boys team total after the day. Flathead is in fifth place as a team and Glacier is tied for sixth.

The meet concludes today.
