Richard Raymond Greenwald, 94

Richard Raymond Greenwald, 94, a longtime Columbia Falls resident, “went to be with the Lord” on Oct. 28, 2017, in Spokane.

Richard was born on Feb. 17, 1923, in Ludington, Michigan, to John and Ida (Benzing) Greenwald. His family later moved to Saco, Montana.

Richard enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in World War II from 1942 to 1945.

He married Blanche Canen in 1946 in Malta and worked as a meat cutter until re-enlisting in the Navy in 1951. He then served in Korea from 1951 to 1955. In 1956 he moved his family to Columbia Falls where he worked at Anaconda Aluminum from 1956 until retirement in 1985. He also served in the National Guard from 1961 to 1972. He continued to reside in Columbia Falls until this year when he became a resident of the Veterans Home in Spokane.

He was an active member of the Assembly of God church, an avid war buff, memorizer of Scripture and lover of family.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Blanche, in 2009.

He is survived by his sister, Freda Ashe, of Darrington, Washington; and his five children, Sharon (George) Meier of Spokane, Diane (Doug) Ormiston of Maple Valley, Washington, Randy (Christine) Greenwald of Spokane, Larry (Pam) Greenwald of Superior, Montana, and Rich (Kim) Greenwald of Helena. He also has seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, at Journey Church, 5091 U.S. 2, Columbia Falls. Officiants are the Rev. Darrel Newby and the Rev. Rich Greenwald. Military burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Columbia Falls.
