Veterans Day events around the Flathead
The following events are scheduled to commemorate Veterans Day in the Flathead Valley:
FRIDAY
Smith Valley School sponsors its annual Veterans Day assembly beginning at 9 a.m. Friday. All veterans and the general public are welcome.
Bigfork High School’s honors history students will present the 18th annual Veterans Day assembly at 10 a.m. Friday in the school’s newly renovated gymnasium.
Students will present facts on the historical significance of Veterans Day, read a Christmas letter from a fallen World War II marine to his sons, honor Gold Star mothers, and recite a poem by C.M. Towsley titled “MIA.”
The winner of the “Voice of Democracy” will read his/her essay and the Bigfork High School band and choir will perform with the cheerleaders serving as the color guard. Students will also demonstrate and explain the steps involved in ceremonial flag folding.
The program is streamed live and viewers can access this service through the school website, www.bigforkschools.org, the day of the event.
All veterans and the public are welcome, and refreshments will be served afterward for veterans and their guests.
The Whitefish High School Student Council is sponsoring its annual Veterans Day observance and program at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the high school gym.
Veterans valleywide are invited to attend in uniform and community members are encouraged to attend.
The program will last approximately one hour. There will be a guest speaker as well as patriotic selections by the high school band, chorus, orchestra and drum line.
SATURDAY
The Cowboy Up Country Cookin’ food truck is serving free chicken-fried steak to all veterans from noon to 7 p.m. on Veterans Day. The truck is located at 651 Somers Road in Somers.
Outside seating only is available. Veterans should bring their military ID.
The Miracle of America Museum is offering free admission for veterans in commemoration of Veterans Day, previously known as Armistice Day, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
