Volleyball Flathead, Glacier fall to Capital, Helena

Flathead dropped a heartbreaking, five-set volleyball match to fourth-ranked Helena Capital 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 20-25, 15-13 on Saturday afternoon in Western AA play at Flathead.

Julia Burden recorded 18 kills, Madde Boles added 16 kills and the Bravettes combined for 10 aces, but Flathead fell two points short in the end, dropping the fifth and final set 15-13.

“It took the first game for us to kind of get going, but they played really well for the next four,” Flathead coach Nicole Fairclough said. “It came down to the wire. Tough loss, but I’m really proud of the girls because they played really well.”

In addition to kills, Burden also led the Bravettes in aces (six) and digs (18).

Flathead returns to action on Wednesday at Helena Capital (2:30 p.m.) and Helena High (6 p.m.). Both are make-up games that previously were scheduled for September but were postponed due to cyber threats to Kalispell schools.

Helena High upset third-ranked Glacier 16-25, 25-23, 25-22, 17-25, 15-12 in a Western AA matchup at Glacier (11-5 overall, 6-2 league).

Helena had 57 kills in the match with Jamie Pickens accounting for 16.

Kali Gulick had 14 of Glacier’s 49 kills. She also led in blocks with eight.

Glacier plays Wednesday at Helena High (2:30 p.m.) and Helena Capital (6 p.m.). Both are make-up games that previously were scheduled for September but were postponed due to cyber threats to Kalispell schools.

LIBBY — Libby continues to cruise, this time rolling by Ronan 25-5, 25-4, 25-13 in a Northwest A Conference outing.

Libby (14-0, 10-0) had 34 kills to just eight for Ronan. Mehki Sykes was the kill leader with 14. Brooklyn Rainer had nine and Jayden Winslow eight.
