Author Marv Sather holds reading, signing event

The West Shore Community Library will host an author reading and book signing with Marv Sather at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20.

His book “Towers of Somers: Flawed Majesty” is set in the 1930s, during the Great Depression in Somers. His fictional characters, the Sanders family, struggle not only financially but also personally, along with their community. Their choices are critical, and with each choice comes consequences. They confront poverty with little to no complaint. Their work ethic is strong. They sacrifice time and energy for family and friends. They quarrel and fight, yet forgive. They fall in and out of love. They experience tragic events but console one another. They embrace the wild, its threats and its beauty.

Sather was born in Kalispell, lived his first three years in Lakeside and Somers with his parents and grandparents. In 1948, his family moved to Libby because Somers lumber mill was closing. Still, the connection to the Flathead Valley was strong. The family visited monthly, and in the summers Sather would stay two weeks with his grandparents where he enjoyed his “home away from home.” Sather taught high school English in Marysville, Washington; Libby; and Chattaroy, Washington, a 37-year career. He also supervised student teachers for 13 years after retiring from teaching. He was Washington State Teacher of the Year in 2000.
