Nancy Seiler presents monoprinting workshop
Missoula artist Nancy Seiler will be instructing a workshop in basic monoprinting with “Golden Open” acrylics from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at Stumptown Art Studio, located at 145 Central Avenue in Whitefish. To register for the $75 workshop, which includes all materials, call the community art center at 406-862-5929.
Monoprinting is the term used for prints that can only be made once, using OPEN Acrylics as “ink.” OPEN Acrylics are a line of professional artist acrylics with a uniquely slow-drying formulation. The increased working time of these colors expands their range to include more traditional applications. With a longer working time, OPEN Acrylics are a perfect water-based option for printmaking and more comparable to oils in this application. The ease of soap and water cleanup eliminates some of the health and environmental concerns sometimes associated with oil-based inks for printmaking. Available in 80 colors, OPEN Acrylics can be used with either synthetic or natural fiber brushes and provides many more options beyond printing.
Along with the inks, a brayer (essentially a rubber roller), and any type of flat object that creates a barrier between the plate and the paper (such as stencils, leaves, mesh, etc.) are used. Painting directly on the plate is another traditional technique, and the most “pure” method of monoprinting. All of these design applications will result in colorful, unique pieces using a creative process.
Seiler has a degree in visual communication and is a Golden Artist Educator for Golden Artist Colors, teaching art workshops from her studio in Missoula, around Montana and abroad. She has exhibited her acrylic paintings and botanical illustrations regionally, which include the well-known Montana Native Plant posters.
