Soccer Glacier girls blank Hellgate girls tie
MISSOULA — Second-half goals by Taylor Brisendine and Cadie Powell carried Glacier to a 2-0 Western AA girls soccer victory over Missoula Hellgate on Thursday.
It was the second meeting of the season for the two teams. Glacier also won the early matchup, 5-0.
“Their midfield is very organized,” Glacier coach Brenden Byrd said of Hellgate.
“It took us awhile to adjust.”
Glacier outshot Hellgate on goal 18-9.
Sophie Smith had seven keeper saves for Glacier.
Paulina Carbajal-Jepsen and Lindsay McDonald “played outstanding defense,” Bryd said.
Glacier (8-0-1 overall, 6-0-1 league) plays at Missoula Sentinel on Tuesday.

Flathead’s huddle was not a cheery place to be at halftime against Missoula Big Sky.
There was no yelling or screaming, but the sentiment was clear enough.
But the disappointment didn’t last.
Facing a 6-1 deficit at halftime, the Bravettes reeled off six goals of their own in the second half to come away with an improbable tie against Big Sky on Thursday night at Legends Stadium.
“You’ve just got to keep believing,” Flathead head coach Jenni Sipe said. “You can imagine at halftime how upset and frustrated we were.
“I don’t think I’ve ever coached with that big of a comeback.”
Big Sky’s Whitney Morrison scored a staggering five goals in the first half, including three in a five-minute span near the end of the half.
The Bravettes shifted momentum — or perhaps had it shifted for them — with two Eagle own goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half, scores that served as jump-starters for the offense.
Chloe Nadeau netted her first varsity goal three minutes after the second own goal, and Shayenn Thompson chipped further into the deficit four minutes later.
Skyleigh Thompson tied the game in the 75th minute, and Shayenn gave Flathead its first lead just a minute later.
Paige Mickelson scored with just more than a minute remaining to cap off a wild affari and earn a tie for Big Sky.
The Bravettes (1-7-1, 0-6-1) scored six goals in the second half despite putting only four shots on goal.
“It was quite an emotional roller coaster,” Sipe said. “Each goal, it was like they could see the belief barrier chipping away. I’m just so proud of them turning around.
“I love that they took that game into their hands.”

COLUMBIA FALLS — Columbia Falls struck early and clung to a late lead to down Stillwater Christian.
“It was a gritty performance,” Columbia Falls head coach O’Brien Byrd said.
“We’re battling some fatigue. This is our fifth game in 11 days. Fatigue is now becoming a factor, and it started to show. I’m really impressed with the girls’ mental fortitude to see it through.”
Josie Windauer scored both goals for the Wildkats, the first of which came in the second minute. Hannah Gedlaman assisted on the two goals.
“Those two girls are leading the scoring on our team, and often times they’re assisting each other,” Byrd said. “They have developed a great partnership up top.”
Columbia Falls travels to Polson on Saturday at noon. Stillwater hosts the Whitefish junior varsity team at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

Baldridge also assisted on a goal in the second half. Cole Hage had two assists.

COLUMBIA FALLS — A free kick and a corner kick were all Columbia Falls needed to edge Stillwater Christian.
“We practice those all the time because we know if we have a hard time scoring in the run of play we can score on those,” Columbia Falls head coach O’Brien Byrd said.
“Tonight, when we couldn’t find a goal in the run of play, and it paid off.”
Story Stemborski manned goal for the Wildcats and delivered his fourth shutout of the year.
Columbia Falls is back on the pitch at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Polson. Stillwater travels to Helena for matches today and Saturday.

Hansen Eystad cashed in with a pair of first-half goals and assisted on the finale in the second half as Flathead busted Big Sky in a Western AA match.
Shane Rieke also had two goals in the first half. Gage Magone completed the scoring for Flathead.
Flathead (4-3-2, 2-3-2) peppered the Big Sky goal with 19 shots. Big Sky on had two shots on Flathead’s goal.
“A great, great team win,” Flathead coach Nate Evans said. “The guys really dug in. They are excited for the second half of the season.”
