Sentinel sinks Flathead in 3 sets

Second-ranked Missoula Sentinel dominated the first set, but Flathead battled back before falling in three — 25-11, 25-20, 25-18 — in Western AA volleyball action Saturday afternoon at Flathead High School.

It was the first meeting of the season for the two schools.

Kylie Frohlich and Shelby Schweyen led Sentinel’s net game with 11 kills each. The Spartans had 43 for the match to Flathead’s 21.

Julie Burden led Flathead in kills with eight.

Madde Boles had two of Flathead’s three blocks.

Bailey topped the Bravettes in assists with 16 and tied for the team-high in aces with two. Jenna Johnson also had two.

“They definitely played better in the second and third (sets),” Flathead coach Nicole Fairclough said of her team.

“We struggled to get anything going today. Sentinel is a strong team. We couldn’t find our rhythm.”

Flathead (3-8 overall, 0-4 league) has Western AA outings this week at Missoula Big Sky on Tuesday and Thursday at home versus Missoula Hellgate.

CORVALLIS — Corvallis had a big edge in kills with Maureen Jessop and Hannah Hutchinson totaling 17 and 11, respectively, in a 25-15, 20-25, 25-14, 25-10 Class A nonconference win over Whitefish.

Corvallis had 45 kills to Whitefish’s 20. Cailyn Ross had nine kills for WHS.

Whitefish spilled Hamilton in Hamilton 25-19, 25-12, 27-25 to finish the day with a 1-1 mark.

Ross had 15 of Whitefish’s 41 kills in that outing. Ross and Marlee Bender had six and five blocks, respectively.

CORVALLIS — Corvallis took care of business in dropping Columbia Falls 25-19, 25-18, 25-11 in a Class A nonconference match.

Corvallis led all statistics except for digs, where Columbia Falls held a 53-50 edge.

Corvallis had 12 aces.

Trista Cowan had five of Columbia Falls’ 13 kills and three of its aces. Both totals were team bests.

Columbia Falls was also at Hamilton, losing a wild 26-24, 18-25, 26-24, 25-19 test.

Eryn Thier had eight blocks and Sienna Utter six for Eureka (6-1, 3-0), which totaled 35 to Troy’s six.

Kassi Peterson had five of Eureka’s 10 aces.

BUTTE — Butte Central rallied after dropping the first two sets to spill Polson 23-25, 17-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-9 in a Class A nonconference marathon battle.

Butte Central held a big edge in digs, 85-27.

Kaelyn Smith had 16 kills for Polson. Cassidy Strizic totaled 12 for Butte Central.

RONAN — Stevensville had no trouble topping Ronan in a Class A nonconference outing, winning 25-12, 25-18, 25-7.

Stevensville dominated play at the net with 32 kills and the service line with 15 aces.

Madeline McCrea had five of Ronan’s 16 kills.

POLSON — Libby picked up another Northwest A volleyball victory Thursday evening, stopping Polson 25-18, 25-21, 25-22.

Jayden Winslow was a force at the net with 11 of Libby’s 39 kills and 13 of the team’s 44 digs. She also tied Alli Collins for the team high in aces, three each. Collins led in assists with 30 and Emma Gruber had the most digs for Libby with 14.

Kaelyn Smith had 12 kills for Polson.
