Whitefish Theatre Co. announces auditions for 'Urinetown'

The Whitefish Theatre Company is holding auditions for “Urinetown,” the final musical production of the 2017/2018 season. Auditions will be held at 6 p.m. on April 9 and 10 in the Green Room at the O’Shaughnessy Center in Whitefish. Actors are advised to enter at the north side of the building and arrive early to fill out an audition application and review the script.

Winner of three Tony Awards and two Obie Awards, “Urinetown” is a fast-paced, hilarious musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, corporate mismanagement and musical theatre itself.

In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must instead use public, pay-per-use amenities owned and operated by the malevolent corporation Urine Good Company or be sent to the dreaded and mysterious “Urinetown” if they don’t obey.

Amid the people, a rebellious yet unsuspecting hero emerges to stage a revolt, fighting tooth and nail to win back the people’s most basic freedom. Despite the gutter-laced title, “Urinetown” catapults the “comedic romp” into the new millennium with its outrageous perspective, wickedly modern wit and sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter.

Adults 18 years and older are invited to audition. No experience or preparation is necessary to audition.

Pages from the script will be provided. Kim Kempfert is the director for this show. The production staff will also feature Don Caverly as the music director.

Rehearsals begin on April 16 and will be held Monday through Friday from 6-9 p.m. for seven weeks. There are eight performances over two weekends on May 31, June 1-3 and June 7-10.
