Whitefish man dies after being pinned under RV

A Whitefish man died Sunday after he became trapped beneath a fifth-wheel RV he was working on in Evergreen.

The man has been identified as 57-year-old Rusty Atchinson, according to a press release from Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry.

Curry said the Sheriff’s Office and Evergreen Fire Rescue were dispatched to the scene at 4:30 p.m.

When first-responders arrived, Atchinson’s upper body was found pinned under a large fifth-wheel RV. He had apparently been trying to jack the RV up when it fell on him, Curry said.

Rescue personnel were able to free him and he was transported to Kalispell Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The incident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
