Whitefish netters top C-Falls
Columbia Falls and Whitefish finally managed to clock some court time on a damp, dreary Tuesday afternoon with Class A tennis dual at two different sites.
The Whitefish boys prevailed by a 6-1 count over the Wildcats in Columbia Falls.
Whitefish took all four singles matches with Columbia Falls preventing a sweep when Chris Howell and Neils Getts topped Zach Brandt and Jayce Cripe of Whitefish in No. 2 doubles, 6-3, 7-5.
“It was fun to watch Howell and Getts play,” Columbia Falls coach Michele Colliander said.
“They pulled through. It was their first time in doubles as partners. They did really well.”
John Gilk lost to Whitefish’s Eric Holdhusen at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-3, “but he really stepped up from last year,” Colliander said of Gilk.
“It was a good eye-opener for the kids,” she added.
“Now they know what competition is like and can take it from there.”
In girls play at Flathead Valley Community College, it was all Whitefish, 7-0.
The two closest matches were at Nos. 1-2 singles with Whitefish’s Claire Carloss and Aubrey Hanks defeating Anna Pickard and Hannah Schweikert by 6-4, 6-3 scores.
“Both teams were excited to be outside playing tennis,” Columbia Falls coach Gene Marcille said.
“Claire and Anna was a good match. Both played well. I’m looking forward to see how that competition develops.”
On the Hanks outing with Schweikert ...
“It was a good battle for close to two hours,” Whitefish coach Patrick Dryden said. “That’s what you want to see early in the season. Both kids mixed it up well. There were probably more winners in that match than all the others combined.”
