Museum celebrates bookstore re-opening

The bookstore at Kalispell’s Museum at Central School has undergone a transformation; turning the remnants of an old cafe into a welcoming reading environment. The Schoolbell Bookstore was renovated thanks to the generous contributions of Mike and Gretchen Apgar.

“They were the project leaders and really the people who wanted to see this happen,” said Jacob Thomas, the museum’s executive director.

He explained that the bookstore was originally designed as a cafe space, complete with a full-service bar, industrial refrigerator and range. But there was never enough foot traffic to keep the venture afloat. Thomas said the renovated store has more space for folks to kick back and relax with a good book, including a large table and easy chairs. While the Schoolbell is no longer a cafe, the store does have a coffee machine and speciality sodas and hopes to expand their caffinated offerings in the near future.

“I think that people are going to be very excited to see it,” Thomas said. “I think it’s going to be a very welcome addition to Kalispell.”

The museum is celebrating the re-opening of Schoolbell Bookstore this Saturday, April 14 from 1-5 p.m. with closeout deals and champagne for the adults and apple juice for those under 21. The museum galleries will also be open, including a new exhibit titled, “Then and Now” which highlights how much daily life has changed over the years. On display will be everything from vintage housewares to technology and clothing.
