Most track and field teams dread the conditions both teams experienced at the Glacier-Flathead Dual at Glacier High School on Tuesday afternoon.

Though temperatures were relatively mild and the air mostly dry, the gusting wind made posting fast times and long marks even more difficult than normal.

But Glacier was right at home, both literally and figuratively.

“We love training and competing at our place, because it’s like that every day,” Glacier boys coach Arron Deck said. “It was just another day at work for us. We live it every day, and our kids have learned real quick that we don’t talk about it too much. We just try to go out and take care of business.”

The Wolfpack did exactly that versus their crosstown rivals.

Glacier’s girls earned a 84-66 win over the Bravettes, and the boys bested Flathead 100-45.

“The wind is at your back for 200 meters, so it’s awesome,” said Glacier’s Annie Hill, who won the 800- and 1600-meter runs in her final crosstown dual. “Then you turn and just have to fight through it.”

Hill and sprinter Adrian Schnee, both seniors, led the Glacier girls to their victory with a combined four wins.

Schnee won the 100- and 400-meter dashes and also placed second in the 200-meter dash.

“She has consistently gotten better,” Glacier girls coach Jerry Boschee said of Schnee. “It doesn’t matter what I’ve asked her to do; she’s kind of taken it in stride.”

The senior trio Deck refers to as the “Big 3” paced the Wolfpack boys in their rout over the Braves.

“Drew Turner and Hunter Nicholson and Elijah Boyd, they’re kind of our workhorses and our captains and our leaders,” Deck said. “It showed with their performances today.”

Turner swept with dashes with wins in the 100, 200 and 400. Nicholson breezed to a sweep of the jumps, winning the long jump, triple jump and high jump. Boyd finished second in the 1600.

Glacier dominated the sprints, taking the top five places in both the 100 and 200. The Wolfpack also four of the top five spots in both the long jump and triple jump.

Dawson Rinehart and Michael Lee were highlights for Flathead.

Rinehart won both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles. Lee took top honors in the shot put and discus by wide margins.

“Considering the headwind, I ran a pretty good time,” Rinehart said. “It’s pretty good just to win, even if it’s not my best. Still a little salty just not being able to give it my best.”

Rinehart’s sentiment seemed to echo trough all athletes and coaches, who were disappointed conditions might have kept some athletes from their best but also happy with the chance to compete.

“It’s like running into a brick wall for the kids (with the wind),” Flathead boys coach Dan Hodge said. “It definitely has an effect, a big effect.

“You have to learn to run in all kinds of weather, because when it gets down to divisionals and it gets down to state, they don’t postpone. You run through the storm.”

“Today was one of those day that you’re competing for places,” Deck added. “You know you’re not going to set a record.”
