WHITEFISH — The calendar may still read April, but don’t tell Derek Schulz.

For the Whitefish track and field coach who traverses the infield donning a hat with “May Matters” embroidered on the back, the Whitefish A.R.M. meet, though still technically in April, serves as the unofficial beginning of track’s most important month.

“We like to think of our meet kind of as a prep meet for a lot of those (bigger meets),” Schulz said. “The competition here is very high. Every race has been contended. You throw this many schools out here, and you have some pretty darn good performers.”

They were out in spades on Saturday, as the mild weather allowed for fast times and long marks that athletes struggled to hit while dealing with nasty winter conditions in many early-season meets this season. All told, 35 marks good enough to qualify for state were posted.

“We’ve had good weather and fast times,” Glacier coach Jacob Dietz said. “These late and long winters, it’s tough for these kids. They’re looking at those qualifying times, and it’s hard to run those times when it’s 45. We’re taking advantage.

“Sixty-five (degrees) feels like we’re having a heat stroke.”

If heat strokes were an issue, Glacier apparently had no trouble handling the symptoms as both the boys and girls cruised to team victories. The Wolfpack girls clipped runner-up Whitefish by 29 points with a total of 115 while the boys crushed the competition, racking up 261 points to second-place Whitefish’s 75.

“They’re appreciating (the nice weather) more,” Dietz said. “We’re taking advantage of the nice days when we can get them.”

The Glacier boys enjoyed nearly equal success on the track and in the field, claiming seven wins in running events and five in field events. The Wolfpack girls won three running events and one field event.

The main objective for the event’s lone Class AA participant, however, was simply staying healthy as state approaches.

“We’ve got a lot of kids that look really good right now,” Dietz said. “It’s just a matter of getting them to the end.”

The same approach applied for other schools, as well, including Bigfork.

“We didn’t load everybody today, so we were kind of working on different things,” Bigfork coach Sue Loeffler said. “I just think they needed that little break.”

The Bigfork girls managed a third-place finish thanks in large part to wins in the 200, 400, 800 and 1,600. Eleven schools and more than 600 athletes competed.

“It’s a spectacle, and you get that spectacle because by the time you throw in these stellar athletes out of Class B and C with the Glacier kids and some Class A kids, it makes for every race being competitive,” Schulz said. “We’ve been fortunate over the years to have some really good athletes here.”
