WHITEFISH — Ryggs Johnston, in his first prep outing of the fall golf season, shot an 8-under 64 to easily claim medalist honors on Wednesday at the Whitefish Invitational.
The senior and three-time state champion opened with a 1-under 35 on the front nine and pulled away with a 7-under 29 on the back nine of the North Course.
Cameron Kahl of Whitefish, Zach Taylor of Hamilton and Trey Kelley of Polson all were next with 76s. The trio finished 2-3-4, in order, via a scorecard playoff.
Bryce Reed and Tanner Hanson, both of Hamilton, and Matt Hobbs of Polson all shot 77. They finished 5-6-7 via the scorecard playoff.
Nine golfers broke 80.
Hamilton, with four golfers in the top 10, took the team title with a 308 score. Polson was second at 316 and Stevensville third at 323.
Corvallis’ Macee Greenwood had the best round for girls with her 8-over 80.
Sammee Bradeen of Libby, 95, was second, Ella Shaw of Whitefish, 97, third. Megan Archibald of Whitefish, Jasie Oyler of Stevensville and Cali Cannon of Polson all shot 98 to finish 4-5-6 with the scorecard playoff.
Whitefish, 407, edged Polson, 415, for the team title.
Corvallis, 430, was third.
