Celebrate Climate Smart art and sustainability

| December 27, 2018 11:25 AM

Climate Smart Glacier Country is hosting a “Climate Smart Art” contest and is accepting submissions that capture the spirit of sustainability and climate preparedness in the local communities.

Whether that brings to mind dramatic photos of forest adventuring, a short film about local organic farmers, or piles of snow carved into the shape of a wind turbine, residents of the Flathead can submit anything that depicts what “climate smart” means to them. The art contest will serve as a companion to the unveiling of the city of Whitefish Climate Action Plan At-A-Glance document, a way to raise community awareness around climate issues and to allow artists and scientists to learn from each other.

The contest entries will be split into several categories for judging:

- Photography and graphic design

- Video (3 to 20 minutes long)

- Mixed-media

- Designated entries to the Whitefish Winter Carnival’s Snow Sculpture event

There will also be a separate “youth” winner for all three categories, focusing on work from elementary, middle and high school students.

To enter, follow Climate Smart Glacier Country on Facebook and Instagram, tag photos of your work (#climatesmartart), or go to the website, climatesmartglaciercountry.org, join the mailing list and submit your files.

The deadline to submit is Jan. 27.

The winners will be selected by a panel of community artists, art teachers and scientists. Awards and prizes will be presented at the Whitefish Performing Arts Center at 5 p.m. Feb. 2, following the Winter Carnival’s Grand Parade. The Art Expo will display the work of all winners and will be accompanied by a free showing of the winning video entries followed by the short film “Depth Perception,” which focuses on the intersection of snowboarding and nature.

The Climate Smart Art Contest is sponsored by the city of Whitefish and Climate Smart Glacier Country.
