A child is in stable condition at the hospital after being run over by a camper trailer on Montana 35 in Bigfork on Thursday morning.

According to Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Tom Manz, the 4-year-old was running down a path and went into the highway at milemarker 31.5 near the Subway sandwich shop when the accident happened at about 10:30 a.m.

The driver of the pickup hauling a camper was unable to see the child due to tall grass and a sign blocking the view, Manz said. The driver locked up the brakes, but was unable to stop in time and hit the child.

The child was taken by ambulance to Kalispell Regional Medical Center and is in stable condition, Manz said.

The pickup was traveling below the posted speed limit of 35 mph and alcohol was not a factor, Manz said.
