Voters to decide county commission, sheriff races

Flathead County voters today will decide a number of local contested races in the primary election.

Topping the ballot are heated races for Flathead County sheriff and the District 3 commissioner seat.

There is a four-way race to replace retiring Sheriff Chuck Curry. Jordan White, Calvin Beringer, Keith Stahlberg and Brian Heino all are vying for sheriff on the Republican ticket. There are no Democratic challengers.

District 3 County Commissioner Gary Krueger is running for a second six-year term as a Republican, but faces a challenge from Republican Gerald “Jay” Scott, who lost to Krueger by 23 votes in the June 2012 primary election. Randy Brodehl and Ronalee Skees are other Republican contenders for the District 3 seat that covers the southern and West Valley areas of the county.

In the Nov. 6 general election, the Republican winner for District 3 commissioner will face Democrat Tom Clark.

In the nonpartisan Justice of the Peace races, William L. Managhan and Paul Sullivan are vying for the justice position currently held by Mark R. Sullivan.

Flathead County voters also are being asked whether 530 acres should be added to the Egan Slough Zoning District. The expansion, placed on the ballot by Yes! For Flathead Farms and Water, would bring Montana Artesian Water Company’s controversial bottling plant in Creston into the Egan Slough Planning and Zoning District.

For late registration, voters must appear in person at the Flathead County Election Department between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. today to fill out a voter registration card and vote.

Voters who have not yet put their absentee ballots in the mail can hand deliver them to their polling place or the Election Department before 8 p.m.

Here is a list of Flathead County polling places for the June 5 primary election, as provided by the county’s Election Department. Polls close at 8 p.m.
